Sam Houston National Forest

The Sam Houston National Forest, one of four National Forests in Texas, is located 50 miles north of Houston. The forest contains some 163, 000 acres between Huntsville, Conroe, Cleveland and Richards, Texas. The forest is only minutes from Cleveland.  A short drive down FM 2025 will find you at Double Lake Recreation area.  Here there are plenty of opportunities for fishing, hiking, canoeing and swimming.  You can participate in many activities with USFS, SFA's Urban Connections program and CCIC at this location.  Please check the "Local Happenings" page for upcoming events and activities.

The 129-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail is a National Recreation Trail meandering the breadth of the Sam Houston National Forest.  Passing through the eastern edge of the forest near Montague Church on FM 1725 close to Cleveland, Texas to the extreme western edge near Richards, Texas. This trail is very scenic and offers hikers a reprieve from everyday stress. Many hikes will be planned for the new year on this trail.  So get ready for exciting days of trail maintenance, snake and turtle identification,  plant and tree identification, storytelling, survival scenarios, learn about native and invasive plant species and much more.   

The City of Cleveland Preserve is a five acre preserve at the edge of town near Hwy 105.  Just under the San Jacinto River bridge you will find  the preserve, open to hiking, nature observation, and a launch site for canoers. The City of Cleveland Preserve is the first conservation easement signed with a municipality in the entire Houston area! Please stop by for a visit!
